Aston Villa Stunned by Olympiakos in Europa League
Late Goals Sink Villans at Villa Park
Match Report and Highlights
Aston Villa suffered a disappointing 1-2 home defeat to Olympiakos in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 32 tie on Thursday night. After going 1-0 up through Ollie Watkins just before halftime, the Villans conceded twice in the final 15 minutes to the Greek visitors.
The match started at a frantic pace, with both teams looking to take the initiative. Villa had the first chance of the match when Jack Grealish's free-kick found Tyrone Mings, but the defender's header went just wide. Olympiakos responded with a dangerous effort of their own, as Giorgos Masouras fired a shot narrowly past the post.
The Villans continued to press for an opener and were rewarded just before the break. Grealish played a clever pass through to Watkins, who then rounded Olympiakos goalkeeper Jose Sa and slotted the ball into an empty net. The goal gave Villa a valuable lead going into halftime.
